Shine, this year's Pride Vermont theme offers a multitude of metaphorical meanings. Rays of hope, sunshine's embracing warmth of inclusion and acceptance, the brightness and intensity of a shining star's accomplishment all come to mind. Given its setting, at the premier LGBTQA occasion, I'd like to play with "shine" in the context of illumination, scientifically speaking, creating that rare but beautiful sight, the rainbow.
Have you ever noticed that three things have to happen to produce the elusive rainbow. The sun must shine from a clear sky behind you into a cloudy, raindrop laden vista in front. You, as the lucky observer must be positioned in between. In addition, to create the brilliant bands of color, from passionate purple to flaming red, the sun must be at a critical angle in the sky, 42 degrees or less. It all has to do with physical properties of refraction and reflection and any higher in the sky and the rainbow would disappear below the horizon. That's why as the sun approaches the horizon just before sunset, rainbows are most magnificent, especially if dark storm clouds frame the background.
So SHINE illuminates, on special occasions, the brilliant colors of Pride. As we celebrate Pride Vermont 2015, let's keep in mind what brings those colors alive. We need the sun at our backs facing a dark and gloomy horizon. Arched before us in vivid splendor emerges that elusive symbol of hope, acceptance and inclusion if the angle is just right.
Hey, I have a thought. Let's launch an awareness campaign called, "42 Degrees". Let's figure out a way to position everyone, community and others, in that sweet spot. We may never actually find the pot of gold at either end, but we can take PRIDE in knowing that the concentric bands of harmonious hues represent something much more valuable, a peaceful co-existence of humanity that acknowledges diversity and accepts each and everyone of us as we are instead of that which we are assumed to be.
